How To: Install a TV Mount

While handymen can do a lot of things to improve the functionality of your home, sometimes we do “smaller” jobs with more of a beautification goal in mind. Something like mounting the TV we can do, but we also want to share with you how to do so!

Step One: Gather Materials

Of course, you are going to want your TV! Then grab an appropriately sized mount, stud finder, leveling tool, drill/hammer/screwdriver (whatever your particular mount calls for), and for some added finishing touches: cord hiders.

Step Two: Affixing the Mount

Go ahead and find the perfect place for your TV. Got it? Good! Now is the time to mark out where to mount the hardware. After you have a general idea of where you want it, take the stud finder and identify your studs. Trust me, you do NOT want to mount your TV improperly and have it fall off the wall in the 7th inning of a Braves game. When you have the studs marked, you can go ahead and drill pilot holes (holes slightly smaller than your screws). Ideally with a friends help, hold the mount up and affix it with screws in those pilot holes! (Most mounts these days have adjustable arms on them to be able to accommodate different stud widths.) Finally, make sure everything is nice and level, of your TV won’t be.

Step Three: Mounting the TV

Again, with a friends help, place the TV on the mount. Depending on the type, you may need to affix something to the back of the TV before this step, so make sure you check the instructions! After the TV is hung on the wall, double check that everything is level one more time before plugging it in and hooking up anything else.

Step Four: Enjoy!

If you do not have an outlet directly behind your TV, you may want to hide the cords, but this is a totally optional step. Congrats! You did it! (I bet it looks great!)

If this seems like too much, or you just don’t want to do it yourself, give us a call! We would love to help.
