Let’s be honest. This heat is brutal. There is nothing like stepping into a sauna at 8am on an August morning in Florida. With the heat comes air conditioners running at max capacity, all day, everyday. So we have to do our part to make sure we keep them running effectively! While we are not A/C repairmen, we have learned a couple tips over the years.
First and foremost, CHANGE THAT FILTER! Your A/C filter should be changed monthly. If you want to go the extra mile, take your vacuum and suction up all the fuzz on the air return grate and behind the filter. Just this simple step will ensure a longer life for your air conditioning unit.
Second, and almost as important, we need to clean that drain pipe. This takes a little more work, but once you get in the habit, it will be super easy. Go ahead and locate the drain pipe on your A/C. Every unit is ever so slightly different, but you should see some PVC somewhere inside. After you have found the pipe, mix up a 50/50 solution either bleach and water or vinegar and warm water. You will need about a cup of your solution. Slowly pour it down and you are good to go! This can be done as often as every month or ever few months, but it’s better to do it more often, especially in this Florida weather. It keeps everything nice and clean with very little work.
Just these two little steps each month will help your A/C run better, your power bill will be lower, and you can avoid the costly expense of a technician visit. Just remember to always be safe and don’t be afraid to call a pro if you need them!
